|  NEW YORK (AP) -- As Apple pitches its newest smartphones, users may find something lacking compared with last year's model: They could break more easily.
SquareTrade, a provider of protection plans for gadgets, tested five smartphones, including Apple's new iPhones, to see if they could withstand drops, dunks and other common hazards. Its finding: The latest models aren't as durable as last year's iPhone 5.
The biggest loser, however, was Samsung's Galaxy S4, which failed to work after being submerged in water and being dropped 5 feet off the ground, according to San Francisco-based SquareTrade.
The phone that withstood SquareTrade's torture test best was Google Inc.'s Moto X. The Moto X is the first phone designed with the Internet company as Motorola's new owner. Released in August, the Moto X is also the first smartphone assembled in the U.S.
"We were expecting that at least one of the new iPhone models would up its game, but surprisingly, it was the Moto X that proved most forgiving of accidents," said Ty Shay, chief marketing officer at SquareTrade.
Officials from Apple Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. and Google Inc. didn't immediately return email messages for comment.
Apple started selling two new iPhones on Friday. The iPhone 5S sports a fingerprint sensor, a better camera and a faster processor. A less expensive version, the iPhone 5C, offers consumers a wider choice of colors and has a better front-facing camera than the iPhone 5.
With every upgrade Apple has made, the latest model has usually been more durable than the previous one, based on drop tests SquareTrade has done over the past few years, Shay said. But that wasn't the case this time.
SquareTrade reviewed each device based on eight factors, including the materials of the device's front and back panels, its size and its weight. It also tested the device's ability to withstand drops from 5 feet and being dunked in water for 10 seconds. SquareTrade says it uses robots to do the testing to ensure consistency.
SquareTrade rates phones on a scale of 1 to 10, with a higher number reflecting a higher risk of the device breaking. All five phones tested were considered to have a medium risk of breakage, but where they fell on the scale differed.
The Galaxy S4 scored 7, the worst of the five tested. The S4 ended up not functioning, with its screen coming half off, according to a video released by SquareTrade.
The iPhone 5S, made of aluminum and glass, scored 5.5, while the 5C, with a plastic housing, had a 6 rating. Both were worse than the 5 rating scored by iPhone 5.
In particular, Shay noted that the iPhone 5C was more damaged when it was dropped than the iPhone 5. And the iPhone 5S also failed a slide test. It slid off of a table when it was pushed, unlike the other devices tested. By comparison, the iPhone 5C slid a little over 3 feet, while the iPhone 5 slid just over 2 feet.
The Moto X had a rating of 4.5, surviving the tests with only the slightest dent. Shay noted that the phone's innovative rounded back molded to the shape of a user's hand makes it easier for the consumer to grip.

| |  In what is being described as the first known event of its kind, a transgendered teen was named as her high school’s homecoming queen on Friday.“I am so proud to win this not just for me, but everyone out there,” 16-year-old Cassidy Campbell said after receiving her crown during the halftime of Marina High’s homecoming football game Friday night in Huntington Beach, CA.

Cassidy rose to national prominence when it was reported that she was entering the contest.“Just to be true to themselves and to let people know around them and to not keep it bottled up inside,” Campbell said about what her win should mean for fellow members of the transgendered community.
Local affiliate KTLA 5 first reported that Campbell had been selected by her classmates at Marina High on Friday to be this year’s homecoming queen.Marina High Principal Paul Marrow praised his students for Campbell’s victory, saying, “Were proud of the message from home of the Vikings has been one of equity, acceptance, tolerance and respect.”
Earlier on Friday it was reported that Cassidy had been chosen as a finalist in the competition .
Leading up to the selection, Cassidy had been insistent that she hoped her effort would raise awareness and support for other transgendered teens.
"If I win, it would mean that the school recognizes me as the gender I always felt I was," Cassidy said in aninterview with the Los Angeles Times . "But with all the attention, I realized it's bigger than me," she said. "I'm doing this for the kids who can't be themselves."
Marina High administrators have also received positive attention for their response to Cassidy’s campaign.
"If Marina High School is to make high-profile news during its homecoming week this year," Morrow said in a statement published by the Times, "then we are proud that the message is one of equity and individual respect." MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A University of Wisconsin student with a nickname of "Silo" is eating his way through school — competitively.
Computer engineering student Eric Dahl now ranks third in the world of competitive eating as determined by All Pro Eating rankings, though he once held the top spot. Dahl has earned more than $18,000 in prize money or merchandise to help pay for his education.
"I'm eating for my education," he said. "It helps me get through."
Dahl was drawn to competitive eating in 2011, at the former Big Red's Steakhouse in Madison. Dahl didn't want to pay for his meal so he signed up for a challenge: eat a three-pound cheesesteak sandwich in less than 10 minutes and skip the bill. He finished in 5 minutes, 50 seconds.
"It just started rolling from there," he said.
Dahl's first paycheck came from Dickey's Barbecue Pit in suburban Minneapolis, where he earned $250 for inhaling nine pulled-pork sandwiches in six minutes. The former high school athlete found the competition and its over-the-top atmosphere reminiscent of professional wrestling.
"I really get pumped when the crowd starts cheering," he said. "I'm friends with other competitive eaters, but once I'm on stage I don't have any friends."
The 6-foot-3 Dahl said he walks a few miles a day, lifts weights twice a week and plays intramural soccer and hockey to maintain his 220-pound weight. The State Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1dvsVlj ) that he eats no more than 3,100 calories a day, mostly vegetables to avoid increasing his waistline, and stretches his stomach by eating 10 pounds of cabbage or broccoli in a single sitting followed by a lot of water.
His next bout is scheduled for Saturday. "Silo" will try to win $1,000 at a national pizza-eating contest on Library Mall at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

| | One quick way to discover new opportunities is by doing structured search engine queries. And it’s fairly easy to do. The video above gives you a good overview of how to do it for yourself:
Step #1
Develop a target list of companies you want to work for. That list of companies is your baseline query for your search. Now, here’s how you get the list. The video above is an example using Google.com in which the job hunter want sto work in advertising in New York City. {You just do what I'm doing BUT substitute your industry parameters.}
1. When you do targeted research, generally you concentrate on an industry or a geographic preference (in this case, New York City). Substitute your city for your search.
2. You need to find the names of all the advertising companies in New York. There are easy ways to do this using the Net. Go to Google. www.google.com and type the following words in the “advanced” option box in Google. The search string shown below instructs Google to search for a directory of advertising firms in New York or a conference on advertising held in New York. We want this list to garner leads for companies.
Your text needs to be filled in exactly the way I did in the video.
My search returned many hits including one for AD:TECH “The Event for Interactive Marketing”. This is a conference held in New York for the Advertising industry. There where also hits for directories of advertising companies in New York, complete with web site addresses, phone numbers, and profiles of the owners.
Step #2 Find People Who Can Hire You:
Once you have a target list of companies to work with, you need to find out who the people are in those companies that can actually hire you. A good headhunter would pick up the telephone. You might not be so inclined, so here’s another way to accomplish your objective.
Go to each company’s web site and gather the names of the people who can say yes. Those people are the executives not the human resource people – they can only say NO! unless you’re a human resources professional. If you’re lucky, every web site will identify their senior executives, including names, titles, phone numbers, career summaries and sometimes email and photos! Web information should be up-to-the-minute accurate, but I would call the receptionist and confirm it.
For this example I’m looking for a sales position. Therefore I’ll seek to locate or research the VP of Sales, VP Sales & Marketing, VP Marketing or General Manager. You would focus your research on the functional areas of interest for your search.
If you’re experiencing difficulty finding names on the site, then go back to Google’s advanced search box and type in the company name in the first box and (Vice President Sales Marketing Director)in the third box. By-the-way, you don’t need to place the words in brackets and don’t put in any commas or punctuation.
That search string will bring you:
All the people who are, or have ever been, VPs OR President OR Directors of Sales and/or Marketing for that company.
The resumes of a whole pile of people from that company whom you may be able to phone to coax information from them.
OR
You can skip all that and use LinkedIn, Spoke, or ZoomInfo
Once you have the name of the individual who is one rung up the ladder from the job you want, you need to process their name through Google again. This time you put their first and last name in the first box and the company name in the third box.
This will produce a list of press releases, and news articles in which they are mentioned, as well as conferences they’ve attended. Read an article or two and clip something memorable to use in a NarrowCast letter.
When you send them the letter, you’ll be able to say. “I read your article in… about… which prompted me to write.” Very powerful.
